Icomera can provide a fully outsourced rail Wi-Fi solution to train operating companies (TOC) covering every element of the service delivery process. This includes working with the TOCs to obtain design and certifications, installation and testing of the solution, developing a commercial passenger proposition, rolling out and fully supporting fleet-wide on-train Wi-Fi service.

Solution Overview

Icomera’s wireless data communication solution is marketed under the name “Wireless Onboard Internet™” and is a total end-to-end solution including hardware, software and communication channels using different wireless technologies i.e. satellite and Wi-Fi for broadband capacity and multiple GSM/UMTS/HSDPA links in parallel for reliability.

The Wireless Onboard Internet™ is a two-part solution where an Icomera Mobile System (IMS) is installed on each vehicle set with the Icomera Stationary System (ISS) gateway being hosted centrally. Icomera also provide an Onboard Wireless Network (OWN), which is a standard wireless network (802.11b/g Wi-Fi) providing network access throughout the vehicle to passengers as well as staff.

The purpose of the Wireless Onboard Internet™ is to provide companies whose business relies on vehicle transportation better Internet performance in terms of connection speed and uptime than any end-user device supplied by a single network operator.

The Best Available Connection

The solution uses Icomera’s patented communication software to manage multiple communication links (Satellite, GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/3G/HSDPA and 802.11 WLAN) in parallel and optimises the use of those links. The solution will automatically detect if a link has dropped and reconnect it while maintaining the Internet connection over the remaining available links.

The innovation of the solution is the fact that it is the only system on the market providing unsurpassed reliability by enabling communication over different technologies. Technically there are no practical limitations as to what communication links can be combined.
