GNER receives Rail Business Award

March 7th, 2007

When UK rail industry celebrated business success on Wednesday, 28 February 2007 at Grosvenor House Hotel, London one of the winners of the prestigious prizes was GNER, for its innovative use of internet onboard its fleet of high-speed Mallard trains.

GNER is implementing a range of connected applications on their fleet of high-speed trains, e.g. Electronic Point of Sales (EPOS), real-time fleet tracking, real-time access to onboard diagnostic systems and passenger internet access. Their fleet of 43 Mallard trains, now being expanded to 47, has been Wi-Fi enabled by Icomera and commercially operating since 2004.

Icomera delivers a turnkey client-server based solution for Wi-Fi on trains that gives not only passenger access, but more importantly a platform for numerous fleet management applications. Online communication with onboard staff PDAs, fleet positioning, supervision of vital diagnostic systems and wireless EPOS for at-seat onboard ordering and live upload and download of sales and stock data to and from the train, are some examples of available applications.

GNER’s industry-leading initiative to Wi-Fi enable it’s fleet of trains was awarded the Information Technology Excellence of the Year at the recent Rail Business Award ceremony.

The criteria:

  • A clear vision of what the IT project, product, system or service had to achieve
  • How the IT projects, products, systems or services were developed
  • How the use of IT facilitated business growth or gave an advantage to you or your customers
  • How the relevant parties worked together to identify and solve problems and achieve success
  • Gains in revenue or market share
  • The overall benefits to the industry or its customers

“The award gives well earned recognition to GNER for their pioneering quest to exploit the full potential of having connected trains” says Frederik Gustafsson, Icomera’s CEO. “Although passenger internet access on GNER’s trains is a success story, we know that they estimate three quarters of the Wi-Fi earnings potential to be related to fleet management applications.”
