GNER honoured with “Innovation of the Year”

September 5th, 2007, Göteborg

At yesterday’s National Railway Awards celebration, GNER received the “Innovation of the Year” award in recognition of their commitment to take full advantage of having Wi-Fi enabled trains.

The Great North Eastern Railroad, GNER, have cooperated with Icomera to enhance the Wi-Fi service on their trains on the London-Edinburgh route; starting with passenger internet access in commercial operation since 2004, and recently adding advanced staff communication and fleet management applications.

Although more than 10,000 passengers use GNER’s Wi-Fi service every week, this is not where the company sees the largest potential from having their 50 trains connected on-line. Far more can be gained from e.g. remote monitoring of vital systems, having staff PDA:s communicating within the regular office network, doing payment authentication on on-line, etc.

Icomera delivers turnkey client-server based solutions for Wi-Fi on trains that give not only passenger access, but also a platform for staff communication and fleet management applications. As train companies start realising the many benefits of a central internet-based communications system, the demand for Icomera’s products and services is expected to increase sharply in the next few years.
