June 11 2014 – Icomera is proud to be supporting Transport for Edinburgh as it aims to become the first UK operator to install a 4G LTE Internet connectivity solution across its entire fleet of buses and trams. The project is already well underway with all 27 tram vehicles due to be connected by July while work on the 700+ vehicle bus fleet is set to be completed by October of this year.

Icomera has already been providing passenger Wi-Fi on a number of vehicles within Lothian Buses’ fleet since 2010. These buses operate on the busiest tourist and commuter routes within the city of Edinburgh and between the city centre and Edinburgh Airport. The solution on Lothian Buses’ fleet is based on Icomera’s M-Series and X-Series mobile broadband gateway products. In addition to passenger Wi-Fi, services and applications such as health monitoring for Lothian Buses’ CCTV systems are also supported. Future expansions of the connected applications are also being discussed to enhance both the passenger experience and the real-time operational monitoring.

Dave Palmer, VP Sales at Icomera commented: “Icomera is delighted to have been selected for this prestigious project. Transport for Edinburgh’s award winning bus service provider Lothian Buses is recognised throughout the public transport industry for its high levels of customer service, so the natural complement to this is a high quality, high speed onboard Wi-Fi service on all bus and tram services. We look forward to working with Transport for Edinburgh over the coming years, using this fleet-wide IP network as a springboard for a host of real-time applications and services.”

Ian Craig, Chief Executive of Transport for Edinburgh added: “Icomera is a well-established provider of innovative and reliable Wi-Fi solutions with a reputation that sits well with Transport for Edinburgh’s vision for a quality 21st century passenger experience”.

The Transport for Edinburgh contract marks the next step in Icomera’s Scotland strategy, which has already seen its award-winning systems installed on buses and trains across the length and breadth of the country. Icomera now also plans to set up a new office in Scotland to reinforce an already strong local presence in the UK.
