Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), the Netherlands’ national rail operator, runs a highly utilised network of around 750 trains, carrying approximately 1 million passengers per day. It is pursuing a long-term strategy to create a modern, flexible, and future-ready onboard digital environment across its train fleet. As part of this journey, and following NS’ sourcing strategy, NS has selected Icomera as one of its technology partners to help support the continuing evolution of its onboard architecture.

Rail operators today rely on a growing number of onboard digital systems, including passenger information, video surveillance, operational monitoring, driver support tools, and connected asset management applications.
As these environments continue to evolve, the ability to integrate, manage, and securely support multiple systems across different generations of rolling stock is becoming increasingly important.
Supporting digital services at the scale of the NS network requires onboard platforms that can accommodate a wide range of operational and passenger-facing applications while remaining flexible enough to evolve alongside future requirements.
NS is working towards an onboard architecture that can support this future vision while providing the flexibility required to accommodate evolving technologies and operational requirements over time.
To support these objectives, NS has selected the Icomera X7 platform as part of its broader onboard technology strategy.
The X7 combines advanced routing, connectivity and application hosting capabilities within a single platform, creating opportunities to support multiple onboard systems through a modern and scalable architecture.
This approach is designed to help enable:
The architecture is also designed to support more standardised approaches to integration and lifecycle management across fleets, helping provide a consistent foundation for future development.
As NS continues to develop its onboard ecosystem, the platform will form part of a wider architecture designed to support long-term digital transformation initiatives. Within this broader strategy, NS is working with multiple technology partners to ensure the flexibility, resilience and long-term sustainability of its onboard digital environment.

The rail industry is undergoing a significant period of digital transformation, with increasing focus on connected operations, real-time information, data-driven decision-making, and smarter asset management.
By continuing to invest in modern onboard technologies and selecting partners with proven expertise in connectivity, integration, and fleet-wide operations, NS is creating a foundation that can support future innovation across its network.
This investment is intended to provide the flexibility to support future developments in areas such as connected operations, edge computing, enhanced fleet visibility, and the ongoing evolution of digital services for passengers and operational teams
Icomera is proud to support NS as part of this journey and to contribute to the ongoing evolution of one of Europe's busiest and most advanced railway systems.
